The project consists of a pavement overlay of Austin Drive from Kitsap Way to Erlands Point Road NW. In addition, the segment of Higbee Road from Austin Drive to the Naval Gate will be overlayed. The project will also improve several curb ramps and include other features to meet ADA accessibility criteria and improve pedestrian safety.
The majority of funding for this project is from the Federal Highway Administration with a match of 13.5% from the City’s Transportation Benefit District.
The City would like to remind residents that the speed limit through the NAD Park is 15-MPH. To help reinforce this, the improvements within the NAD Park will include construction of a speed table and marked crossing of Austin Drive.
Project Status (Updated September 23, 2016)
The City’s contractor, Puget Paving will begin improvements to Austin Drive on Monday, September 26th. Crosswalk curb ramps will be demolished, regraded, and then replaced at the intersections of Austin Drive and Olding, Bye, and Higbee Roads, and at the Erlands Point Apartments entrances. In addition, catch basin frame and grates along Austin Drive will be removed and replaced. During the work the contractor will provide traffic control with flaggers and construction signage. Vehicles and pedestrians will be safely flagged through the intersections. At times, one lane alternating traffic may be necessary. Sidewalks at the effected intersections will be closed, however detour routes for pedestrians will be maintained. The demo and curb ramp work is anticipated to take approximately two weeks, weather permitting.
Once the preliminary work is complete, the contractor will begin the grinding, pavement repair and final overlay of Austin and Higbee Drives. Weather permitting, this work will take approximately two weeks. Specific information regarding the timing and traffic impacts of the road work will be updated as the preliminary work is wrapped up.
