Bremerton bounces back under Mayor Cary Bozeman
In Depth: Newsmakers of 2005Puget Sound Business Journal - December 23, 2005After a lengthy slumber, Bremerton is awakening to massive redevelopment, due largely to the leadership of Mayor Cary Bozeman. The city's downtown was long neglected by developers and retailers, who chose to build at the nearby Silverdale Mall. Shipyard workers parked their cars in lots covering prime waterfront land.
Now, Bozeman is championing a massive redevelopment plan that includes the new Kitsap Conference Center, luxury waterfront condos, restaurants, hotels, a marina expansion, new office buildings, a waterfront boardwalk and a new government building.
So far, $500 million has been invested in redevelopment projects.
Bozeman, the former mayor of Bellevue, moved to Bremerton in 1996 and became mayor in 2001. After years of neglect, the city is becoming something its citizens are proud of, Bozeman said.
