Basic Family Emergency Preparedness
Preparing for disasters requires that we get back to the basics of life. We need food, water, and shelter. We need to know that our families are safe and secure. If we follow these basic steps, emergency preparedness is easy. Below are simple tips to help you and your family prepare for all types of hazards.

Create a disaster plan, including an out-of-area contact so you and your family can reunite.

Bolt and brace furniture that is waist high or above to the wall to prevent it from falling on you when the earth moves.

Prepare a disaster supplies kit to include:
  • At least 3 days of water (1 gallon per person per day) for each family member.
  • At least 3 days of food for each member of your family. Don't forget your pets.
  • Obtain a first aid kit, include both non-prescription and prescription medications.
  • Store personal hygiene items such as toilet paper, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, sanitary napkins and other items you or your family may need.
  • Include extra eye glasses, contact lense supplies, and denture supplies.
  • Supplies such as flashlights, batteries, NOAA weather radio, matches, large garbage bags, small amount of cash, non-electric can opener.
  • Tools such as small shovels, pliers, duct tape, plastic sheeting or a tarp.
  • Warm clothing including hard-soled shoes or boots, rain gear, hat and gloves, warm coat, sunglasses.
  • Something fun like games to keep the children occupied and chocolate candy to give everyone a treat.
